you’re face to face with the man who sold the world

maura @ 7:59 pm

I really owe you a meaty, substantial post, o interwebs, but it’s been a loooooooong week, culminating in the Harvest Festival at Gus’s school today. I helped staff the apple booth and schlepped heavy boxes of apples around and I am tired.

So here’s something light, frivolous, and weekendy!

Footwear trends I hate:

CROCS: Aiiieee, it’s not possible to fully explain the depth of my hatred. Alice comes close, but I must add that a tidbit I picked up at my old job about a certain celebrity chef who has 30 pairs that he washes in the dishwasher also feeds my ire.

BALLET FLATS: Look, I’ve still got all my Duran Duran records, too, but some things that happened in the 80s should stay in the 80s.

Footwear trends I love:

CHUCKS: Everyone loves Converse Chuck Taylors. Low top, hi top, all manner of colors + prints + even those stealthy black w/black soles ones. I had some orange ones once and then some dinosaur ones in college but ultimately I had to accept that Chucks are not for the slightly wide of foot. I’ve made my peace + moved on, and instead I got some for Gus on eBay.

FUN RAIN BOOTS: Yay for colorful and whimsically-patterned rain boots for kids AND grownups. I have some plain all black ones, but am keeping my eyes peeled for a more fun pair. Bring on the puddles!

“Harvest Festival” is shorthand for “fundie!”

We just got back from Falloween, which is shorthand for “weenie kids.” Some gang of Montesorrians threw black walnuts at Max. I am still doing laundry. But he won 1st place for costume and 3rd for pumkin-carving. Somehow I am still in a very bad mood, maybe I’ll be like Milli Vanilli and blame it on the rain. Also the dogs, who ATE the prize-winning pumkin and tossed it in the sandbox!

Oh yeah, the funds were raised. Gus kept asking me if we could keep the money we made at the apple booth! Not like we didn’t drop the ca$h on lunch, the moon bounce + inflatable obstacle course, face painting, cotton candy, pumpkin painting and a batman action figure from the white elephant sale.

Sorry about the black walnuts, but YAY for Max and all his prizes! We had a costume parade but no contest, but Gus wanted to “save” his costume for Halloween (?).

I meant “fundamentalist,” not “fundraising!” Instead of evilbad Halloween, they tend to have “Fall Festival,” “Harvest Festival,” etc. That’s a clue that there won’t be any fun spookiness, wanton paganism, or cold beer. (At least in Virginia.)

OHHHH, I get it. I don’t think that ours was purposefully anti-evil, though come to think of it there was no beer to be had! I think the Harvest thing was more so we could sell apples + cider + other fally stuff. Gus’s school is PK-12 so things couldn’t be that spooky or the little kids would be scared. Though the face painters did take very scary requests.

As for the shoes–I am kind of happy about the ballet flat comeback. I had hot pink ones circa 1983 (oops, accidentally wrote 1883!). Wore them with electric blue tights and a long lavendar t-shirt (ala “Flashdance”). Blue nail polish. Blue squiggle earrings with polka dots. Ahh, those were the days! I can’t wait until Madeleine is 14!

I think you need boots like this: http://www.dianeslittlelambs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=2113&Category_Code=DRB
Target has knockoffs: http://www.target.com/b/ref=sc_fe_l_1_1041816_11/601-7281527-0022555?ie=UTF8&node=13913321

Har, I’d love to see your 19th century ballet flats! Gus has some blue nail polish right now!

Ooh, the pirate boots are very cool, and would go with the overall pirate theme around here recently. I am afraid of the “mommy & me” rainboots section on that first site — much too Laura Ashley!

What about Mary Janes? Madeleine and I saw a pair of plaid ones on our way to brunch the other day. (Well, she may not have seen them. Not sure how high she can see over the stroller’s edge*.)

*”Stroller’s Edge,” starring Crispin Glover’s baby. (Kidding!)

Yes to Mary Janes! They come in so many kinds, too: plaid, Doc Martens, etc.
