we just got a letter
maura @ 9:01 pm
Well, not really a letter, but rather a phone call. Friday afternoon, while I was in class and J was at the playground with Gus after school: our top kindergarten choice let us in! We are so so so happy and relieved: we are set for the next 6 yrs (and longer if Gus wants to go to their middle/high school), they are friendly and progressive, and no homework for kindergarteners, hooray!
On the minus side, poor Gus is not having the easiest transition. He’d gone back to his old school last week and reunited with a best buddy who’d been away all summer, and now we are making him go someplace else. He’ll be fine soon enough, and did really well today on his first day (though we didn’t make it the whole day and I was there the whole time). But of course we have a ton to do with our work and school too, so hopefully the transition will not take too long (selfish, selfish me).
Woah, it’s been so long, internets! We have been busy here in Brooklyn. First our vacation, which was lovely (read 3 books) if terribly rainy (7 out of 9 days). Then my classes started, and they are all shaping up to be pretty fun, with the papers/projects nicely spaced, too. Then the kindergarten thing. I am looking forward to a few weeks from now when we are all set in our new routines (and maybe the house will be clean by then, too).
Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiired, so tired.

Thanks! We are pretty psyched. And today was much, much better.
TELL me about the mornings…we are constantly rushing for our 7:48am bus, ouch. Hopefully we will all adjust to it soon. No more late nights in front of the internets for us, boo hoo.
Glad Mathilda is having fun too!
NYC is like another planet–a place where “rent” means something I don’t quite understand (even though I Am Jur’d property!) and “public school” does not seem all that public after all.
Our choices here are a) the public school, a 5 minute drive from home, b) b) the private Christian school set up so that white children wouldn’t get sullied during integration, c) an insanely long commute across the river each day to some overpriced place (one is Montessori but sadly didn’t seem worth it, the other is private/Cath and a bit too exclusive for us and honestly doesn’t seem like you get what you pay for), or d) home schooling (it’s not just for fundies anymore!).
PreK was good, last year not so great, but first grade seems better. The third day he went in all bummed out because his tadpole had passed on, and she let him go to the art room and make a craft! Plus she’s got this big honking tattoo on her arm, and some semblance of control of the kids! And no nap time!
Oops I was wrong, he hates school this year. “It’s not the teachers or the kids,” he says, so I have no idea why, but it’s a struggle.
Man, Anne, I am so sorry that school is suddenly bad on your end. What a huge drag. Gus is okay with school itself now, but is still giving us transition-related (we think) yucky behavior at home. Which is better than having him act that way in school, but still, I am tired of being yelled at.
Hopefully it will get better for both of us soon!
That is great news!
The early morning kindergarten schedule is kicking our asses here. But she has adjusted.
Good luck to Gus!
